Church Under Construction

In this drive-time blog Im reminded that construction can be messy and requires a great amount of patience. However, it should be viewed as a sign of growth. It is a necessary growing pain.

Oh yeah, the video wasn’t intentionally that shaky. But it creatively works for a construction feel.

1) What areas of your life or ministry is currently under construction?

2) Here’s a more fun one. Is there anything that needs some demolition?

  1. #2 is an interesting question… a lot of people don’t want to think of demolition when it comes to ministry/church. I guess if you refer to it as “change” or “addition by subtraction”, maybe it’s more tolerable.

I certainly would be more excited about my church if there were more change going on, but then again, that is my flawed human reaction putting the reason I go to church on myself and not on worshipping God and glorifying Him, seeing people come to faith in Jesus, not going to church for what I get out of it.

  2. At the moment the demolition needs to happen first, for some re-construction: Effective ministry always depends on a relationship with Jesus as well as the obedience to his word. So I find my self tearing down old feelings to replace them with new graces toward an old pastor/friend.

So these days God really seams to use his perfect sense of humor to integrate new forgiveness towards older ministry friends that I need to make contact with.

Today I’m taking physical steps toward forgiving an old Pastor of mine who let his comfort and self preservation get in the way of our 12 years of service together.

I started with prayer, but then I just called him up. I told him, “this may seam a little weird, but I just needed to call you and express how much I miss you old friend”.

I reminded him of some of the good times, then we talked about some of the things happening now. He seamed a little uncomfortable (that’s normal for him), but he began to lighten up I think.

The strange thing, is though I am a couple of years older then him, I used to look at him like an older brother. It feels like the roles have reversed a little, but I’m glad I called him anyway.

    Your servant,
    Don
