Listen for the Whisper

In this clip from Smallville, Clark is learning to use his super-hearing and if he can hear his father’s voice. It is a great illustration of how we need to learn to hear our Father’s voice! Notice the distractions and how he pushes through to hear the voice of his father.
There is a wonderful story found in 1 Kings 19 that helps us understand how to hear the voice of God.
The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. (1 Kings 19:11-13 NIV)
Elijah was a prophet that had seen God do some really big things: drought, raining fire from heaven, angels feeding him, ravens feeding him, a never-ending jar of oil and more. But, God wanted to teach him that He spoke in different ways also. When someone gets saved, it is a BIG miracle that God does and sometimes we need to learn that God will speak to us in a whisper too.
- What did you think about the Smallville illustration? Did you connect with the point?
- What are some common distractions that can make it difficult to hear the whisper?
- How can you improve your hearing of God’s whisper?
